He is a cofounder and member of Jendela Art Group. In the early phase of their careers, Jendela Art Group members surprised art audiences in Indonesia with their works that were very much removed from socio-political themes while being also removed from the kind of works capitalizing on the technical sophistication of realist painting. Instead, they showed inclination for extreme naïvism in the form of meaningless ‘doodles’ or formalism – that was also extreme – by drawing exclusively on minimal visual elements of line, color and texture. Relative to his friends in the group, Alfi has consistently been exploring new possibilities in painting tradition. In the last ten years his painting has shown shifting themes and styles. He has come to the conclusion that his painting is a personal therapy by which to accommodate and control various issues troubling his mind. With such a mindset he began choosing certain themes and approaches to develop in series of paintings. Combining expressionism, raw-art, and sometimes realism too, Alfi makes his paintings autobiographical notes and at once fields of experiments to keep exploring and testing various possibilities of painting – more as ideas than just the products of imaging on canvas. In 2010, he co-founded the Artists Collective, Office: For Contemporary Art International in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
